How the Lodge came About
In the late 1960’s Alf Barry, a descendant of the original Joseph Barry who in his day created a veritable business empire in the Southern Cape, moved to Witsand and established a small hotel on the land he had inherited overlooking the Breede River at the site of the previous Port Beaufort. He constructed a small-craft harbour below the high water mark, and, calling his establishment the "Lucky Strike Botel" that was the forerunner of the Breede River Lodge today, became the first truly "float in" Lodge in South Africa.
The Hotel endeavours to cater both for the local family, national and international traveller who would like to see a very special part of South Africa.
